Understanding Aida Cloth, Fabric Count and Finished Cross Stitch Size

Understanding Aida Cloth, Fabric Count and Finished Cross Stitch Size

When buying a cross stitch pattern, one of the most common questions is: how big will my finished design be? The answer depends on the fabric you choose, especially the Aida cloth count.

What is Aida cloth?

Aida cloth is one of the most popular fabrics used for cross stitch. It has a clear, even grid of holes, which makes it easy to place each stitch neatly. This is why it is often recommended for beginners, but it is also widely used by experienced stitchers.

Each square on the fabric is where one cross stitch is usually made.

What does fabric count mean?

The fabric count tells you how many stitches fit into one inch of fabric.

For example:

  • 14 count Aida means there are 14 stitches per inch
  • 16 count Aida means there are 16 stitches per inch
  • 18 count Aida means there are 18 stitches per inch

The higher the count, the smaller the stitches.

How fabric count changes the finished size

The same cross stitch pattern will finish at different sizes depending on the Aida count you use.

A design stitched on 14 count Aida will be larger than the same design stitched on 18 count Aida, because fewer stitches fit into each inch.

For example, a 200 x 200 stitch pattern would finish approximately:

Aida Count Finished Size in Inches Finished Size in Centimetres
14 ct 14.29 x 14.29 36.29 x 36.29
16 ct 12.50 x 12.50 31.75 x 31.75
18 ct 11.11 x 11.11 28.22 x 28.22
20 ct 10.00 x 10.00 25.40 x 25.40
22 ct 9.09 x 9.09 23.09 x 23.09
25 ct 8.00 x 8.00 20.32 x 20.32
28 ct 7.14 x 7.14 18.14 x 18.14
32 ct 6.25 x 6.25 15.88 x 15.88

Which Aida count should I choose?

For most stitchers, 14 count Aida is a great starting point. It is easy to see, comfortable to stitch on, and works well for many designs.

You may prefer:

14 count Aida if you want a larger finished piece or easier stitching.

16 count Aida if you want a slightly smaller, more detailed finish.

18 count Aida if you want a finer look and are comfortable stitching smaller squares.

Higher counts like 20, 22, 25, 28 or 32 can create a more detailed finish, but they may be harder to see and are usually better suited to confident stitchers.

Don’t forget to allow extra fabric

The finished size guide shows the size of the stitched design only. You should always allow extra fabric around the design for framing or finishing.

A good rule is to add at least 2 to 3 inches of extra fabric on each side.

Final tip

Before starting your project, check the stitch count and finished size guide on the pattern listing. This will help you choose the right Aida cloth and plan your finished piece with confidence.
